BONSERNEWS.com – A total of 170 members of the Israeli army’s main special forces unit are threatening to go on strike.

This is in the aftermath of the government’s decision to expedite the revision of the Judicial Draft Law (RUU).

A letter has been provided to the commander of the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit. .

It contained an announcement that from next week the unit’s 170 active reserves would cease their service.

“We recognize the potential loss of our strike in reserve duty in the unit, but at this time we have no other action to stop the devastation the law will cause which will affect all of us,” the letter said, as reported by the Times of Israel.

It said in a Channel 12 report that at least 80 active reserves of Sayeret Matkal signed the letter in the coming days.

The Sayeret Matkal unit is primarily responsible for intelligence gathering missions behind enemy lines.

They are also assigned to counter terrorism and hostage rescue operations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has served in this unit.

There are also a number of figures born from Sayeret Matkal and taking important roles in government such as Naftali Bennett and Ehud Barak.

The strike action clearly threatens the military capabilities of the Israel Defense Forces.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said troops missing training sessions would undermine military readiness.
